Disposition Options for Damaged Items

Last updated: June 2, 2026

When a returned item does not meet restock criteria, due to damage, removed packaging, or failed QC, Manifest offers four disposition options. Each brand selects a default option during onboarding, and this selection determines how we handle and clear out non-restockable inventory.

How It Works

  • Each brand is assigned a labeled disposition box at the warehouse.
  • Damaged or failed-QC units are placed in the brand’s designated box.
  • Once the box reaches capacity, we proceed with the brand's selected disposition action.
  • Note: Perishable items are not eligible for donation, return, or third-party rework and will be disposed of immediately.

Option 1: Donate

  • Items are collected and donated to a partner organization on your behalf.
  • Items not eligible for donation will be disposed of.
  • Manifest can provide basic documentation or donation receipts upon request.
  • Ideal for: Brands that support sustainability or charitable initiatives through unsellable-but-usable products.
  • Handling and Admin fees may apply for sorting, labeling, or coordination depending on item volume.

Option 2: Dispose

  • Items are permanently discarded by the warehouse team through standard disposal, recycling, or destruction processes.
  • Ideal for: Perishables, hygiene-sensitive goods, or low-cost products not worth recovering.
  • Disposal fees may apply. See your rate card for more info.

Option 3: Return to Merchant

  • Items are consolidated and shipped to your preferred address once the box is full.
  • Ideal for: Brands that rework, recycle, or audit damaged goods internally.
  • Shipping and Handling costs may apply based on frequency, weight, and destination.

Option 4: Return to Reverse Logistics Partner

  • Damaged or non-restockable units are forwarded to your designated 3rd-party reverse logistics partner for inspection, rework, or disposal.
  • You must provide destination details and either shipping labels or carrier account info. Manifest can recommend providers if needed.
  • Ideal for: Brands with more complex rework options.
  • Shipping, Handling, and Admin fees may apply for sorting, labeling, or coordination depending on item volume.
